Jenny Angel by Margaret Wild and Anne Spudvilas

I’m not really an emotional person, yet picture books tend to hit raw nerves with me and Jenny Angel is one of those books that grabbed the old heart and held it tight enough to squeeze out a tear. Jenny angel tells the story of a little girl who’s brother, Davy is dying.

Jenny tells Davy that she’s his guardian angel, she speaks of her flights and her wings and gives Davy faith that things will be alright. Noone can see her wings, so she wears a raincoat all the time, occasionally allowing Davy to feel her wings under the coat.

We journey with Jenny, as we do with Davy towards his death as he becomes weak and as she continues to inspire him to have faith in his guardian angel who is watching over him day by day.

This is a story of hope, of beauty, of death and of grief, it’s inspirational and emotional.

The images painted by Anne Spudvila’s are simply beautiful and the story is one that will make some cry, some have hope and, given the right community, encourage the angels amongst us to continue to wear their raincoats.
